Klamath River Steelhead

Part of the Wild and Scenic River system, the Klamath River offers excellent steelhead fishing set against a backdrop of spectacular scenery.

As the sign says, Happy Camp is the "Steelhead Capital of the World."

The Middle Klamath is loaded with steelhead, especially around the Happy Camp area.  Five tributaries empty into the Klamath River near here.

Happy Camp is located in northern California along Highway 96, about a 3-hour drive north and west of Redding.  Here is a link to the Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce, where you can find maps, lodging information, etc:

Steelhead go up to spawn.  They can range in weight from 1/2 lb. to 8 lbs.  They usually average about 2-4 lbs. in the Middle Klamath.  Steelhead are a very explosive fish when hooked.  There are several methods to catch them, such as plugs, bouncing roe, and flies.

Be sure to bring your camera!
